Week #26: Morning Glory

“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive—to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” – Marcus Aurelius

I love sleep, it’s one of those beautiful gifts that God gave to us. Dreams are also one of my favorite things & are usually a rich, wild ride. But this morning I woke up at 5 AM. Why? Because God’s beautiful moments are like breaths. They’re always there, you just have to take them.

The reason I needed to be up so early was because I completed a 5K—The Color Run! Now such things & I do not go hand in hand. But when a coworker suggested this walking-optional, colorful 5K, I actually wanted to do it. The Color Run special is special because at points throughout the course, participants are blasted with brightly colored powder. Color? Count me in!!

Even though there was no pressure (it’s not even timed), I was pretty nervous. The girls I was with—my coworker, her sister & friends—were all at least somewhat athletic & I didn’t want to slow anybody down. But, as usual, my worries were unsubstantiated. The entire experience was a blast (of color!); the crowd (15,000 people), the color stations & fellowship all filled me with energy & it was hard to stop smiling. After crossing the finish line with about 1,000 other people—all of whom started out dressed in white to maximize the before/after effect—we danced to the music & waited until the countdown to simultaneously launch our color packets into the air. It was beautiful; get the pics here 🙂

I never thought I’d say that a 5K was one of my most enjoyable experiences, but I guess, when the moment is there I just have to trust God & take it. Whew!

Week #21: Moving forward

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, & doing new things, because we’re curious & curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” – Walt Disney

Currently in my life I do a lot of sitting. I sit at work, when I drive around, when I wait for my friends to wake up on Saturday mornings & when I’m writing blog posts, of course. Due to that (& probably a few other subconsciously mysterious factors), I’ve gotten a misconception of myself that I’m not really achieving much with my life right now. This comes to the front especially when I’m thinking of AN52 things & posts.

Most of this week, my head’s been buzzing with What cool ‘thing’ can I come up with? which has changed to What can I honestly fit in?. Ideas popped up, then fizzled as I realized they weren’t really that well thought through. The crunch time of Saturday morning loomed & seemed only to remind me that I had no idea what to blog about yet. Then I had to go to my apartment to let the carpet cleaners in & it dawned on me. I’m living AN52 every moment of every day.

Not only have I never hired someone in to clean my carpets, but I’m doing that because I’m moving out of my own apartment into a house with friends (both of which I’ve never done). Also this week marked my first time celebrating Geek Pride Day (May 25–complete with towel, Gryffindor shirt & ThinkGeek pin) & attending my high school Alumni Banquet (as an alumna).

I’m right smack in the middle of a beautiful part of my life right now, where simply living through each day brings little wonders & curiosity fuels learning about myself & the environment I’ve got to experience. It’s an awesome blessing & it helps remind me that my heavenly Father has a beautiful plan for me that’s not waiting somewhere for me to stumble across. It’s under my feet right now & that’s a whole new realization.

Week #20: Color me crazy

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.” – Georgia O’Keeffe

A couple months ago a friend told me about a local race called “The Color Run” where at different points in the race, you get blasted with brightly colored powder. Now I’m against running like it’s a facehugger’s insides, but I’m for color like it’s all the things I love. Clothes, walls, refrigerators—bright & beautiful colors make ’em better & express how I love to see the world.

Ironically, I’ve never applied that love of color to my hair until today. This ‘thing’ is not exactly new because I had dyed it once before today (but with dark red highlights that no one really noticed). However, now blue & purple hues tip my tresses & reveal to the casual observer some of my inner crazy, exciting wack-a-doodle. Ditto!
